Traveling to Rhode Island for scoliosis or complex spine care
Short answer. Many adults with scoliosis, flatback or a previous spine surgery that didn’t work travel for a specialist opinion. If you live in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York or elsewhere in New England and the Northeast, you can see me at University Orthopedics in Rhode Island. Send your images ahead and bring full records, so the first visit can answer your questions.
Where do I see patients?
Providence sits on I‑95 between Boston and New York. I see patients at four locations:
- University Orthopedics, Kettle Point: 1 Kettle Point Ave, East Providence, RI 02914 · (401) 443-4270
- University Orthopedics, East Greenwich: 1598 South County Trail, Suite 101, East Greenwich, RI 02818 · (401) 457-1500
- University Orthopedics, Cumberland: 2138 Mendon Road, Suite 302, Cumberland, RI 02864 · (401) 457-1500
- Spine Center at The Miriam Hospital: 164 Summit Ave, Main Building, Providence, RI 02906 · (401) 793-2435
Surgery takes place at Brown University Health hospitals, including The Miriam Hospital.
Can I send my images before I travel?
Yes. Upload your X-rays, CT and MRI through the University Orthopedics imaging portal, so the images are there at your visit. If you already have a treatment plan and want another opinion, use the practice’s second-opinion request form. Send the images themselves, not only the written reports: I need to measure them.
What if I don’t have full-length standing X-rays?
For scoliosis and alignment problems, the most useful images show the whole spine and the hips while you stand. University Orthopedics offers EOS low-dose standing imaging. Ask when you book whether new images can be taken at your visit. What scoliosis X-rays show →
What should I bring?
- images and reports from every scan, especially the most recent
- operative reports and implant records from any previous spine surgery
- a bone density (DEXA) report, if you’ve had one
- your medication list and the name of your primary care physician
- a family member or friend, if you can: a second listener helps

Will my insurance cover care in Rhode Island?
It depends on your plan. Before you book, ask your insurer whether an out-of-state specialist visit, and surgery at a Rhode Island hospital, are in network or need a referral. The office can tell you which plans it accepts: (401) 443-4270.
If surgery is planned, what changes when I live farther away?
Plan for the pre-operative visits, the hospital stay and the first follow-up. Arrange who will drive you home and stay with you. Ask at your visit how long you should stay near Providence before a long car ride, and which follow-up visits can happen closer to home. The Journey walks you through each step, and the family and caregiver edition helps whoever comes with you.
